Emissions in SaskatchewanSaskatchewan Emissions of Greenhouse Gases The expected increase in global temperatures is thought to be related to increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere. Greenhouse gases come from both natural and human sources. It is thought that increases from human sources is a major cause of global warming. Saskatchewan people do contribute considerable amounts of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere from a variety of sources. These include electricity production and consumption, vehicle use, oil and gas production, heating buildings and agriculture. Saskatchewan people on a per capita basis are the second largest contributors of greenhouse gases in Canada after Albertans. However, total amounts are relatively small compared to total emissions world-wide. Controlling Saskatchewan emissions alone would be insufficient to offset climate change and its impacts on Saskatchewan. In fact, controlling global warming implies a world-wide effort to reduce emissions and lower concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. |
