Emissions Per Vehicle

How much CO2 does a vehicle put into the air every year?

It depends on many factors including:

  • the vehicle
  • how far you drive
  • where you drive and
  • how you drive

Every litre of gasoline that your vehicle burns produces 2.4 kilograms of CO2. If you drive 20,000 km a year your vehicle produces about:

  • Mid-sized SUV = 6 tonnes
  • Mid-sized sedan = 4 tonnes
  • Gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle = 2 tonnes

For Fuel Effeciency Ratings of newer vehicles see the Office of Energy Efficiency Fuel Consumption Guide or check the EnerGuide label for information on new vehicle's city and highway fuel ratings and estimated fuel consumption.
