Mitigation DefinedMitigation is an intervention by humans to reduce the sources or to enhance the sinks of greenhouse gases. Sources of greenhouse gases include the burning of fossil fuels and land use changes, mitigation activities directed at sources reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere as compared to a previous process, activity or mechanism. Sinks of greenhouse gases include any process, activity or mechanism that removes a greenhouse gas, an aerosol, or a precursor of a greenhouse gas or aerosol from the atmosphere, or prevents the release of a greenhouse gas, an aerosol, or a precursor of a greenhouse gas or aerosol into the atmosphere.
