Government of Canada Releases New Green Plan

Last week Canada’s Minister of the Environment, Rona Ambrose, unveiled the government’s new strategy for climate change. The proposed changes to Canada’s Clean Air Act focus around smog reduction and target a decrease of greenhouse gas emissions of 45% to 65% below 2003 levels by the year 2050.
Proponents of the plan feel that targets are realistically attainable and signify tangible progress for a country that has been emitting more and more greenhouse gas emissions since it signed the Kyoto agreement.
Critics argue that the plan is insignificant, that 2050 is too late of a target, and that intensity based targets will make Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions worse before they get better.
